Fayetteville NC's Annual Dickens Holiday Celebration

Tomorrow in Fayetteville, NC, we start the Christmas season with our annual Dickens Festival. The streets will be filled with people dressed in Victorian costumes, complete with horse-drawn carriages and carolers singing. It really is a sight to behold. Our historic downtown is transformed into a bygone English era.

Above is my photo of Tiny Tim. The actors perform the play "A Christmas Carol" but then also roam the streets staying in costume and in character. This is the Tiny Tim character taking part in the candlelight procession.

What is it about festivals like this, which ends with our annual Tree Lighting Ceremony, that lifts the spirit? Whatever it is, I love it. And I love this time of year. I've always been a winter and a Christmas-time person.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!

Peace,
Lynda

I love this photo! It's like a trip back in time. Very nicely captured.

Thank you!! Oooo and thank you so much for the note you sent for the birthday book my husband made for me. What a very sweet and thoughtful gift! Thank you!!! :-)

Yes, I love wandering around downtown during the Dickens Festival (though it's getting more difficult as it's becoming extremely crowded). I feel like I've been transported back in time to Victorian England. I wonder what it would be like to live back then. But I only wonder, because it would mean living sans electricity and sans my camera. I can't live without my camera!

Hey, I wanted to make sure you got the info. I sent about the photo contest: www.methodist.edu/capefearfestival

We still need to update the site with the entry rules and prize info. Hopefully we'll have that up soon. I'm hoping you'll enter :-)

Have you fully recovered yet from your big trip? I love some of the photos you've posted!

Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Happy December!

Cheers,
Lynda

Aww, you're most welcome. From your FB post I gathered it was a nice birthday? Thanks for the kind words, too. I'm glad we can mutually inspire one another. Your candle photo certainly made me want to play with fire again ;)

It's really cool you guys have that. I don't think I've ever looked to see if we have anything like it here. It sounds pretty amazing. I'm sure it would get crowded, though. I'd miss my camera and the internet. Also, the dresses. I'd have a problem with those lol.

I know I listened to the music, but I'm not sure I remember reading anything. I'll pop over and check it out! Thanks for sending it again. I'd really like to. I haven't been taking as many photos lately because I'm making ebook covers on the side now. My friends convinced me I should give it a try. I make covers for fanfics, but until recently I'd never done it for original works (or even thought I could make a living at it). So far I've made a few for friends who are self-publishing, and I'm going to see where it goes from there. As long as I'm not juggling too many projects, i definitely will sign up for the contest.

The book cover thing kind of ties into my big trip. I loved it so much I want to travel the world ALL the time. If I could make enough money off book cover design then I could support myself from a great many place around the world (especially if I stick to ones with a low cost of living and where USD would go the farthest). It's just so awesome to wake up and have a new adventure each day, and I could stay long enough to get a good taste of a place before moving onto the next. it's a big dream, but I really want to make it happen. I gotta stay here for a while, though, to put some money away in the savings and hopefully get this book cover thing off the ground. If I could make it doing photography that would be awesome, but I still have so much learn and I don't think I'm anywhere near a professional level, but traveling the world I'd get in a lot of practice ;) So, maybe that will work out someday, too.

I did :) Thanks! I hope you did too!

Happy December!

Book covers!! How exciting!! I want to see what you've done. Is there a link somewhere?

There are contests and stuff for book covers designers too: aiga.org/about-50-50

Later this week, we'll have up more information about the contest. We've worked out the specifications and rules for the photos and stuff like that. Now we are working on getting the prizes together.

Just keep the link and keep checking, eventually we'll get it all up: www.methodist.edu/capefearfestival

If you get enough money to travel the world, take me with you!! Or if you want to go to Bulgaria to pick up a little Gypsy girl let me know :-)

Currently I'm entering a photo contest to try to win a trip to London. I've been to Europe but never London or England and it looks so very pretty (my niece is at Oxford and posting photos everyday).

Don't give up on the photography!!! You've got a really good eye. And you can use the photos for the book covers!

I don't know if you ever take any of the photo classes or graphic design classes at creativelive.com ... but they sometimes offer awesome classes and they are free. You kind of have to pick through to get the good teachers (avoid the folks that are just on there to sell their book or latest gadget), but there are some truly great teachers and classes.

Thanksgiving and Birthday were great! My hubby's birthday is tomorrow, then it is on to Christmas. December is such a party month for me it's hard to get anything done!

Cheers,
Lynda

I don't have a portfolio yet. I've only done a few, but one of the writer's I did an exchange of services with for her book cover and she's going to host my covers on her site and code it all for me. But that won't be up for a while. I'll let you know when I have something to show!

I didn't know that. Cool! I'm just doing them for ebooks for writer's who self-publish, and it's all still kind of new so I'm a ways off from entering something like that. It was pretty inspiring to look at what was up there, though. And it has some helpful information. Thanks!

I'll keep checking back!

My mom and several others have said they're going to stowaway in my luggage, so if you don't mind sharing a tight space I could bring you along ;) Hey, I'd totally do it. I don't know anything about Bulgaria but it would certainly be an adventure.

I'd really like to go to Europe but it's not one of the cheaper places to travel and those will be what I stick to more than likely. I hope you win your trip! I'd love to see the pictures.

Thank you :) I'm not giving up! Just redirecting my focus for the moment ;). I do plan on using them for covers. I'd like to build up a better selection to use for stock, but I just haven't had the time.

I've never taken any classes. I've read articles or watched tutorials. Thanks for the link! This is why you're awesome. Always sharing cool stuff.

I'm glad they turned out nice. Happy belated birthday to your hubby! It does sound like an eventful month. August is kind of that way for our family because we have so many birthdays and anniversaries.

Take care!

Thanks for the birthday wishes and the Christmas card :-) ... I dropped a little package of goodies for you in today's mail (12/18) ... should be there by Friday (?).

Merry Christmas!
